Documents that are not issued by New Zealand government agency, such as power of attorney, academic records, must be notarised by a Notary Public in New Zealand. Please contact the Department of Internal Affairs of New Zealand if you are uncertain whether your documents require notarisation.
Fees vary between Notaries so you may want to phone more than one.
The Notary will produce a “Notarial Act” which states exactly what they have done, e. witnessed a signature or certified a true copy.

Documents which have been authenticated by the Department of Internal Affairs of New Zealand can now be sent to the Chinese Consulate-General in Auckland for consular legalisation.
Where to submit your application?
The Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Auckland is responsible for processing applications from Northland, Auckland and Waikato.
Applicants from other regions in Northland may apply at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in New Zealand at Wellington (www.chinaembassy.org.nz).
Applicants from Southland may apply at the Consulate-General of P.R. China in Christchurch (christchurch.chineseconsulate.org).
Documents to be used for private purpose: $40, per document
